Cruciferous vegetables have always been considered good for your body as it helps in the prevention of cancer. Many studies have shown that the intake of vegetables in your diet on a regular basis have proven that the risks of getting cancer has decreased. And why is that so? That is because of the substances and composition of cruciferous vegetables that are great anti cancer agent. Let us look at what these substances are:

Indole-3-carbinol

Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is a phytochemical that is believed to be effective in the prevention of many types of cancer, including breast, cervix, colon and endometrium. Some studies on I3C show that individuals who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, particularly those that contain this phytochemical, have lesser risk of developing cancers in places mentioned above. Furthermore, I3C is also believed to be effective in stunting the development and growth of tumors.

Isothiocyanates

Many studies have shown that isothiocyanates, a phytochemical that contains sulfur, is one of the most effective cancer fighting ingredient in Cruciferous vegetables belonging to the Brassicaceae family. This substance is abundant in broccoli, kale, turnip, cabbage, and watercress.

The anti-cancer properties of isothiocyanates do not only include preventing the activation of carcinogens, but help in the speedy elimination of these toxins in the body as well. Moreover, isothiocyanates also neutralize the harmful and poisonous effects of activated carcinogens.

According to studies, isothiocyanates aid in the prevention of tobacco linked cancers, such as that of the esophagus and the lungs. Furthermore, it reduces risk of other types of cancers, particularly respiratory and gastrointestinal cancer.

Sulforaphane

Another anti-cancer phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables, specifically in brussel sprouts, is sulforaphane. This ingredient serves as an antioxidant. It also assists in stimulating detoxifying compound. If you want to improve your chances of not getting prostate or breast cancers, then it is imperative that you eat vegetables that contain sulforaphane.

Aside from the cancer fighting properties of sulforaphane, this phytochemical also helps in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
